Cuba: Past and Present
This is a course about Cuba, emphasizing the period since 1800 to the present, with a particular focus on the period since the Cuban revolution of 1959. The course would give special attention to certain topics: the role of the U.S. in the history of Cuba, the importance of sugar to the island and subsequently tourism to the Cuban economy, the issue of race on the island, the gradual demise of the Fidel Castro regime, the current situation confronting Raul Castro, and the prospects for Cuba’s future in light of the administration of President Donald Trump. The course would be interdisciplinary in nature, including lectures on music and dance.
