Language and Identity
How does the way we talk reflect and shape our identity? The words we use, the topics we talk about, how we engage in discussions – how do these connect us to others? Or distance us from others? In this course, we draw back the linguistic curtain to reveal some of the language features we use unconsciously to create individual and social identities. We will consider the interactions between language and gender, culture, age, region, and social class, in both US and international communities. Our topics will speak to current issues such as the language of social media, transgender rights, disability rights, gender equality, and the #MeToo/Time’s Up Movement.
