Satire, Parody, and Farce: In
(OLLI Class and Events)
Satire, parody, and farce are among the most ancient, popular, and enduring forms of comedy – on the page, the stage, and the screen. This course will examine the history and practice of these three comic species in performance from Aristophanes to Stephen Colbert. Satires to be considered will range from Gilbert & Sullivan to Lenny Bruce, parodies from “Don Quixote” to “Saturday Night Live,” farces from commedia dell’arte to classics by Charlie Chaplin, Lucille Ball, and Peter Sellers. Video clips of comic performances will be a significant component of the course.
